Mirabilis laevis, also known as Desert wishbone and four o clock, is an herbaceous ground cover that goes dormant in summer. Spreading easily by seed and sprouting up vigorously in winter with the first rains, it produces a profusion of small purple blossoms that open and close with the sun, hence the name four o clock. Mirabilis laevis only grows in southern California, so it makes a great local plant for seasonal color and pollinators such as sun moths. Great for in between larger shrubs or slightly shaded areas.
