INFO
California has the highest plant biodiversity of any U.S State on the continent due to a wide range of habitats and geographical features. San Diego County in particular has more endangered species than any other County in the Continental U.S.
Here you can learn more about the habitats of San Diego County and the wider region, the plants and animals that inhabit them, and what we do here at Walker’s Wildlands.
Environmental Restoration
Planting native plants on your property is one of the best things you can do for the environment. Native plants together form habitat and food for wild animals and many plants themselves are already rare or endangered. Using native plants to re-create habitat is one of the best ways to directly combat the extinction crisis, sequester carbon and preserve local environments. Add to this the natural water savings, no need for artificial fertilizer, carbon sequestration, and more birds, bees and butterflies!
Preserving Local Natural History
Much of what people think San Diego’s habitats look like comes from lands that have been degraded over time by invasive species. Invasive plants fill in areas that have been disturbed, and leave only a handful of weeds where there may before have been hundreds of species, leading towards local extinctions.
The process of habitat restoration includes removing invasive species, planting species native to that location and monitoring the progress. This combats the extinction trend, provides food and habitat for wildlife, and protects the plants unique to San Diego, helping to restore our natural landscape.
Research
We also conduct research on California native plants in various fields from fire ecology and management, to culinary and fragrance, to contribute to botanical knowledge and appreciation of local habitats and Biodiversity.
