The Chaparral Yucca, also known as the chaparral candle for its huge central flower stalk, is a drought tolerant species with a wide range. It forms an almost dome- like spread of leaves from its central stem, where in 5-10 years, upon maturity, it spends all its energy on a 10-15ft tall flower stalk before finally expiring. It is also known for its relationship with the Yucca moth, a clear example of symbiosis with pollinators. The yucca relies on them for pollination and the moth relies on the as a food source for its young. So if you have a yucca that has finally taken to flower, leave it for a bit after for the yucca moths, and there will still usually be more seed left over to grow!
