California sagebrush is the namesake shrub of the coastal sage scrub habitat. A very tough and drought tolerant species, with a wonderful sagey fragrance. California sagebrush and California buckwheat are the two most common coastal sage plants and together they form a majority of this habitat. Due to this habitat being one of the most common outside of inland areas, this plant can work well almost anywhere. Full sun and low water conditions are fine for this plant, although it will lose leaves in the summer. This can be relieved somewhat by summer watering, or it can be left alone. A habitat staple and therefore always a good landscape choice, as it will reliably grow and support wildlife.
