A beautiful Chaparral shrub (or medium tree) native to the channel islands off the coast of Southern California. Although not naturally found on the mainland like its close relative Prunus ilicifolia, this is still a great choice for wildlife, as the fruits are loved by various birds and other animals.
As a Chaparral species these can live for many decades and reach heights of 15 – 25 ft tall, although unlike some other Chaparral species, these tend towards upright growth, not often growing 25 ft wide with wide spread branches. This makes them great for both hedge lines as well as areas with space for larger plants. The fruit is also edible, although there isn’t much fruit around a large seed. The flavor is nice however, and the seeds are traditionally eaten after being prepared in a method similar to that used on acorns.
