One of the two wild strawberry species that cross to make our modern agricultural variety, these berries thrive in a shady and semi moist environment. This strawberry is found in the wild in California in more woodland or high elevation areas, but will work in coastal areas as well, though coastal strawberry(Fragaria chiloensis) would be a better choice there. Small but very sweet berries are a joy for either people or wildlife, as well as the preceding white flowers.
