Coast live oak is the most common oak species in Southern California and a critically important species for habitat. Oak woodlands form their own habitat type and just by themselves support hundreds of animal species with food and shelter. If you can plant an oak on your property, do so! It will live for hundreds of years and provide shelter and shade for the next generation and beyond. The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is right now!
