Narrowleaf milkweed is the most common milkweed species in Southern California and usually the best habitat choice for garden use. Very popular as food for the caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly. An important thing to keep in mind is that it will lose its leaves in the winter, or even die back above ground completely, re -sprouting in the spring. Easy to grow in most conditions, even without watering in the summer. Reaching 3.5 ft or more in height and with very narrow leaves close to the stem giving it its name. The flowers are typical for milkweed, with attractive clusters of purple/maroon or whitish purple.
