Lupinus albifrons is a perennial Lupine species native to Chaparral and Sage scrub communities Throughout California. Unlike most Lupine species which are annual and have a life span measured in months, this is one of several species that will grow into a medium shrub around 4ft wide and high, and persist for several years! They add the magic of lupines to your landscape year round, and are pretty popular as a result! Not only do they have the huge light blueish to purple flower spikes in the spring, bu they retain their leaves year round, adding eye catching geometric leaves throughout the seasons. This species prefers a full sun location, and after the first year it’s best to hold off on watering very much during the summer. Like most natives, Silver Lupine doesn’t need additional fertilizer, but thrives in sandy and low nutrient conditions, partly due to the fact that Lupines are a nitrogen fixing species, adding nutrients back to the soil.
