Scrophularia californica, California figwort, or bee plant is a fairly small herbaceous shrub found in multiple habitats. At home in coastal sage scrub, chaparral and forest. Reaching only a few feet tall, it sends up flower spikes another several feet before unfolding tiny red blossoms. This small stature and tall stalks make it perfect for fitting between or under larger plants, and sending tall flower stalks to reach above the canopy. It is also a host plant for the Variable checkerspot butterfly – Euphydyras chalcedona, and a nectar supplier for many other species including wasps and bees.
