The most common sage across California, Black sage is an integral part of sage scrub ecosystems. As a host for several butterfly and moth species, food for many others, and providing plentiful seed for birds. Dark green foliage is appealing and contrasts with its light purple blossoms. It can lose leaves and appear drier in summer conditions, perking back up with rain. A tough widespread shrub, it thrives in full sun conditions and doesn’t require much water once established. All around easy to grow, wildlife supporting, great color, and leaves make a great seasoning to add to various recipes.
