Fuschia flowering gooseberry is a thorny shrub that prefers shady yet fairly dry slopes and shady Chaparral areas. The light green, almost feathery foliage looks very lush, but will fall off in winter, as this shrub is deciduous. Besides the spikes, it also grows a huge floral display of fuschia like blooms, hence the name. The bright red tapered flowers hang from the underside of the reaching branches, also providing a great hummingbird buffet. Put this shrub in a shady spot, or among Chaparral or other taller plants that can provide it some shelter.
