Toyon or California holly is a Chaparral shrub reaching 12 plus feet in height and bears clusters of white flowers followed by a profusion of bright red edible berries. The fruit is good if somewhat bland off the tree, but is better dry. This shrub works great for hedges or as a small tree, anchoring a landscape. The flowers and fruits provide more than just a nice seasonal color as well, as many birds are very fond of the fruit. Tending to grow more upright than wide and sprawling, Toyon is great for a large shrub in a more narrow space.
