Rhus ovata, or Sugar bush, is a close relative of another local species, Rhus integrifolia, (Lemonade Berry). Like its close relative, Sugar bush is a large Chaparral species, mighty shrubs that can reach the dimensions of a tree over time, up to a max of 30ft wide or tall. Evergreen, with lush foliage, it works great for hedges and full sun areas with lots of space. Continuing its comparison with lemonade berry, Sugar bush is a much better choice for areas further inland, even up to high desert, as it can survive frost whereas lemonade won’t. Sugar bush also has sour fruits that can be used in a similar way, thought not as effectively as they are smaller. The two species can also form hybrids together, and the choice between the two really just depends on how close you are to the ocean.
