California buckwheat is a mainstay of sage scrub and other habitats throughout the southern half of the state, and into neighboring states and Mexico. A hugely versatile and common species, this is an easy choice for almost any location. 4 subspecies exist, each slightly more tailored to its local environment and climate. It supports 15 known species of butterflies and moths, and feeds many more. Commonly growing with Artemisia sagebrush species, they form a the backbone of coastal sage scrub habitats, and will easily tolerate no additional water once mature. Water once monthly when not raining, and it will keep more greenery. In summer and dry conditions it can enter a dormant state, losing many leaves and looking a bit like it might be dead to those unaware, until summer ends with the first rains.
